Visual Weight in Elements of Design

Back to Eva's Home Decor Site

Excerpt from DECORATING IDEA BOOK by Heather J. Parker:

"Visual Weight can't be measured by scales instead, it's all about perception. An overstuffed armchair, for instance, has more visual weight than its small wicker counterpart. Likewise, a table made of wood appears heavier than one of glass. Even if two objects are exactly the same size and shape, one can appear weightier from a visual point of view. A sofa upholstered in a large-scale floral print appears to more overpowering than the same style in a small check. Similarly, one in a dark, solid color has more visual weight than one covered in light neutral hue. It's all part of the balancing act that adds up to a well-designed room"
